Charlottesville attack: What, where and who?

On Friday night, hundreds of marchers descended on the University of Virginia carrying torches and yelling slogans "white lives matter" and "blood and soil".

Protests turned violent in Charlottesville on Saturday, as white supremacists clashed with counterdemonstrators and a car ploughed into a crowd of anti-racist and anti-fascist demonstrators.

Here is what we know.

What happened and when?

A "Unite the Right" rally was planned for Friday August 11 to protest against the removal of the statue of Confederate icon General Robert E Lee.

'We are seeing the beginning of white supremacist movement' in US

Described as one of the largest white supremacist events in recent US history, it was organised by Jason Kessler, a former journalist and a member of the Proud Boys, an ultra-nationalist group.

Protesters gathered again on Saturday August 12 and clashed with counter-demonstrators.

At 11:28am a local state of emergency was declared by the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle.

At 1:42pm a speeding car rammed into counter-demonstrators.

The speeding car, a Dodge Challenger, fled the scene but was soon located and stopped by Police.

Later in the afternoon, a police helicopter crashed while en route to the rally, though officials did not elaborate the details.

Where did it happen?

This took place in Charlottesville, a university town of 46,000 people, in the state of Virginia, US.

Charlottesville has become a focal point of the resurgent white supremacist movement after officials there voted to take down a statue of the Confederate General Robert E Lee.

As usual, everything you’re being told about what happened in Charlottesville by the mainstream media is distorted for political effect. To sort it out and find out what really happened (and why it matters), you need to listen to independent, intelligent analysis from someone who was on the scene and saw exactly how many of the key events of the day were staged to deliberately unleash the Antifa mob onto the streets to instigate violence.

What’s clear from all this so far, by the way, is that militant left-wing extremists are now attempting to exterminate White culture in America. All the “tolerance” and “diversity” of the Left, it turns out, excludes straight white Christian males, all of whom are denigrated, suppressed and demeaned by the insane left-wing mob whose exclusionary ideas are, by definition, racist and bigoted. Is it any wonder young white males are tired of being marginalized by an insane left-wing mob rooted in totalitarianism and inherent racism against Whites?

“We either have free speech or we have blood in the streets,” explains Stefan Molyneux, conforming what I’ve also said which is that Google, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter censorship targeting conservative voices is actually a root cause of the escalation of all this violence and social unrest. The radical Left believes that conservative voices have no right to be heard (and no right to even win elections). In essence, the Left is calling for cultural extermination, yet crying out that they are somehow the victims in all this.

The White House has defended President Donald Trump's reaction to deadly violence over a white supremacist rally in Virginia, amid criticism he did not explicitly condemn far-right groups.

But a spokesman said his condemnation included white supremacists.

A woman was killed on Saturday when a car rammed into a crowd protesting against the rally in Charlottesville.

Separately, a rally organiser was chased away by protesters as he tried to give a press conference on Sunday.

Jason Kessler, who organised the controversial "Unite the Right" march, was heckled and booed as he blamed the police for not preventing the violence, which he also condemned.

Nineteen people were injured in the car-ramming incident, and another 15 people were wounded in separate clashes related to the far-right march on Saturday afternoon.

Hours after the violence erupted, Mr Trump said he condemned "in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides".

"The hate and the division must stop right now," he told reporters in New Jersey, where he is on a working holiday. "We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation."

But his comments did not explicitly condemn the white extremist groups involved in the rally, an omission that was strongly criticised by Republicans and Democrats alike.

Many, including senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, echoed the sentiment of Colorado Senator Cory Gardner, who tweeted: "Mr President - we must call evil by its name. These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism."

So we see, as Neal Frisby predicted that youth violence, racism, riots, etc will increase at a time in the US. Nit only that this will lead to a call for a unbias president, supporter of all, whom will be love by all but unfortunately he will lead them to the Antichrist.

Now, let me add this, concerning Trump, i remember someone saying that since the day i interpreted Trump as Trumpet, that he gave up that day but i dont care.... I will never give up on true prophesy. The wuestion now is , cant we see this same Trump using His vocal cord just like Trumpet.

The city will be built along the seashore. The bible says the Lord Himself will have His left foot on the sea, His right foot on the earth and time shall be no more. The Lord shall sound with the voice of the Archangel and with the trump of God. Building on that seashore; the Lord put him on that seaboard telling us our time is over and that the real trump will call. It doesn’t say trumpet, it says trump. Don’t get confused. He may or may not know God, but he is associated with all these elements, all of the money men, the underworld. He, himself, may not know where the money is coming from. He has huge casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A great fantasy world is coming. During that delusion, they will not know what hit them, saith the Lord. I don’t want to hurt the feelings of those people on the seaboard, but they better turn to Revelation 8 as a mountain burning with fire, a huge asteroid is coming to hit the sea; a third of all fish will be dead and a third of all shipyards will be wiped out. That is where he (Trump) is, he is in the shipyard, right on the east side of New York City. In one hour, great riches are come to naught (Revelation 18: 10)."

Nothing on this earth has been like it or ever will be like it when the seventh vial from the seventh trump is poured out. So, there are two warnings in the name; the going away and the destruction of this earth"

AUGUST END TIME NEWSLETTER - THE FUTURE, THE PRESENT AND THE PAST SIGNS OF TIME

Let us start from the future events, then we move to the present and the past.

“According to the Scriptural and prophetic foresight, we are headed for a flood of events even before this age ends. And according to Rev. 18:8-10 judgment will come in one day and in one hour upon the last Babylon. Of course the world will be included in this swiftness of judgment.”

We are about to witness an extremely unusual convergence of events that many believe could represent a major turning point for our nation. By now you have probably heard that on August 21st a total solar eclipse will move across the entire continental United States for the first time in decades. In fact, we have not seen a total solar eclipse cross from the west coast to the east coast in 99 years. And it will be the very first total solar eclipse that is only visible in this country since the United States first became a nation. Starting with that event, there is going to be a whole lot going on until we reach the end of September. The following are 12 critical events that are going to happen over a 40 day period from August 21st to September 30th…

The 12 Critical Events

August 21 – The most spectacular solar eclipse in American history will take place on August 21, 2017 and will be visible from coast to coast, according to NASA. It will be the first total eclipse visible only in the USA since the country’s 1776 founding.

The “Great American Eclipse” will sweep across portions of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Seven years later, another very unusual total solar eclipse will move across our nation, and when you plot the paths of both eclipses on a map, they form a giant “X” right over the center of the United States.

August 23 – A FEMA exercise known as “EarthEX2017” will simulate “catastrophes such as mega earthquakes, cyber terrorism or high altitude electromagnetic pulse attacks”…

An exercise sponsored by FEMA and the U.S. Department of Energy set to take place on August 23 called EarthEX2017 will wargame responses to catastrophes such as mega earthquakes, cyber terrorism or high altitude electromagnetic pulse attacks.

The exercise will simulate a “subcontinent-scale, long duration power outage, with cascading failures of all other infrastructures,” according to the official Earth Ex website.

“Black sky events” are defined as, “Catastrophic occurrences caused by man or nature that bring society to its knees.”

September 1 – This marks the start of FEMA’s annual “National Preparedness Month“.

September 1 – The U.S. State Department’s ban on U.S. citizens traveling into North Korea goes into effect. Many are concerned that this is yet another sign that we are moving toward war with North Korea.

September 11 – This will be the 16th anniversary of 9/11.

September 20 – Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset.

September 21 – The UN International Day Of Peace

September 23 – This is the date of what has become known as “the Revelation 12 sign”. If you are not familiar with this alignment yet, the following is a very brief summary…

On September 23rd a unique astronomical alignment of the Sun, Moon, constellation Virgo, constellation Leo, and planets Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and Venus. Revelation 12 is deeper than this sign (check our previous article for the true revelation of Rev 12). But we cannot deny the fact that heaven declare his glories and there shall be signs in the heavens, in the moon and the stars at the end of time. This is just one of the signs, so there should not be any exaggeration attached to it as some are doing now, September 23 is not the rapture day, the scriptures clearly reveal nobody will know the day or the hour of the rapture.

September 24 – Very important national elections will be held in Germany. Watch out their next president, because as Britain is about to leave the EU, them Germany and France will rise as the super power in the EU.

September 29 – Yom Kippur begins at sunset, and it concludes on September 30th.

September 29 – U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says that the debt ceiling will be breached on this day if Congress does not raise it by then.

September 30 – If Congress does not pass a budget by the end of this day, there will be a government shutdown just like we witnessed in 2013.

On top of everything else, the month of September is when the Federal Reserve is scheduled to begin unwinding their 4.5 trillion dollar balance sheet…

The other big market force that could ruffle markets is clearly the Fed, which is expected to begin the untested task of unwinding its $4.5 trillion balance sheet in September.

In addition, it is very interesting to note that a large asteroid will come within 4,200 miles of our planet on October 12th…

The asteroid has not been seen since its 2012 discovery, when it sped past Earth at about one-fourth the distance from Earth to the moon. It’s been too distant and too faint to be detected over the last five years. As it starts to approach Earth this summer, large telescopes will be used to detect it and re-establish the asteroid’s precise trajectory.

The asteroid, known as 2012 TC4, could come as close as 4,200 miles to Earth, NASA said. That’s actually fairly close, when you consider that the moon is about 239,000 miles away.

As we can see, floods of event is at hand, watch and pray always brethren.

Now, let's see the past and the present events

Age of Fulfillment

This is From Bro Frisby's library - Nov 2016, Monthly Letter.

In this letter we’re going to go into time phases. In the beginning God created man, Adam and Eve.

In the first phase Adam and Eve sinned and knew they were naked, Gen. 3:7, and covered themselves. Also Cain was the first murderer. Violence came when he killed Abel. (Gen. 4:8)

The next phase will take us to Noah’s day. Gen. 6:5 says God saw the wickedness of man. Verse 8, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Verse 13 says “And said unto Noah, the end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence” When God warned Noah of things to come he moved with fear and prepared himself and his family for what was ahead!

In this hour the real church of God should do likewise! [But many are not]. We are nearing the sunset, this is definitely the last twilight of time! – II Pet. 2:4, “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell. And now in verse 5, He spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

”Luke 17:26, 27, “And as it was in the days of Noah so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”

In this next phase we’ll start with the Roman Empire and Babylon. Before we go any further we will take a look at the failure of the Roman Empire and the coming failure of the Western World.

It all started with the growth of Rome. They found the empire so large that the growth of the obligations to take care of the army, the government workers and the expansion program that they were in could not be met by ordinary income. So they started a borrowing program to keep up with all the benefits and the entitlements.

They began to borrow from their retirement funds to pay the workers with their own retirement money, promising to pay back the money when times got better.

That put them on a road of no return. At one point 50 denarii would pay for the cost of an average families’ annual food needs.

By the time the Roman Empire collapsed the cost of that same standard was over 6,000 denarii.

Many countries, including the U.S. are looking at borrowing the retirement funds from the federal workers. – Doesn’t this sound familiar?

That has put them on the same road of no return. The one thing that the modern world has is printing press money. This will end in a worse and faster way than the Roman Empire ended in.

The Roman Empire began its decline with immorality, violence and corruption and was such that the empire began to include internal debt eventually debasing their currency.

One of the greatest for immorality was Pompeii, a part of the Roman Empire, which was destroyed by a violent volcanic eruption. Also there were the great games in the Roman Coliseum where gladiators killed Christians for sport.

“Let’s take a quick look of what shall be, as we are definitely near the climax of the age, mystery and suspense will abound!

Sudden and violent changes concerning nature and society. An age of the hidden and the exposure of the deadliest of sins will arise! [This is happening all over Europe, extreme weather and temperature... You will see details in our video below].

The extreme – fantasy replacing reality! A dream world that turns into a nightmare!”

In 1967 Brother Neal Frisby’s prophecies projected these events and we quote:

“Revolution – U.S.A. – Riots, bloodshed. Teenage rebellion will catapult the nation through a change “never seen before” (religious, social and civil.)

The nation will give birth to a new form of government. Violence shall take it. It will change into a social type religious spirit finally like Babylon.

Sodomites – It was hard for me to write the last part of this. The Lord told me preachers won’t cry out against this anymore, but go along with it!

This is not written to be indecent, but for a sign. It will bring the appearing of the Sodomites. Homosexualism will be taught and encouraged in education. Homosexuals will plague the backsliding churches. It will even get into the Pentecostal organizations.

All this I saw and more. Men will marry men, women will marry women in unprecedented numbers. Teenagers naked will run wild with drink, sex and dope, exploring for new ways in sensual pleasure, sadistic to the stage of madness. Morals will completely collapse.”

Recently we see churches coming out to march in support of homosexuals

We even have gay pastors in some churches. What an Abomination.

Next he spoke about body painting – clothes painted on. They now have great annual body painting events in public parks, blocking off streets with hundreds participating in body painting, totally nude, as thousands watch them paint the nude bodies –a legal event because they call it “art.”

He also saw the electronic age and the self-driving cars. All of these events happening now he spoke of occurring just before the Lord returns.

[You will agree with me that Neal Frisby really saw into the future as at 1967, now 50 years later we see that almost all his prophecies has come to pass. You need to search for more of this latter rain prophet prophecies, it will give you revelational knowledge in this end of time, and prepsre you for the Lord's coming].

We are at the end of time! Rev. 3:17, “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”These are all signs of the last days. Jesus cometh. End quote.

The Signs of the Time.

This is also taken from Special writing by Prophet Neal Frisby, i will interrupt once in a while.

“We are living in times that the prophets and the kings desired to see! What an age!

The signs of the time and the miraculous are all around us!

The unfolding of these events reveal to us that time is very short indeed! In fact occurrences that we see coming our way now in our age will merge into the apocalyptic events of Revelation!.

– In other words, it is my opinion that there will not be another generation to bridge the gap, but the Lord will be coming in our generation and we are already far into it!”

–And Jesus said, “Look up for thy redemption draweth nigh and yea, is even at the door; For ye see perfectly well the armies of the world are compassed around the Holy Land, the place of Abraham’s promise!” (Luke 21:20, 32).

“We noticed the build up on the Arabs side and on the Communists part; they are absolutely surrounding Israel in military power. A definite sign!” [Recently we see Iran and Russia moving closer to the Israeli territories.]

“The Scriptures give certain signs that would take place just before the coming of the Lord.

And we will take note of a few of them!

– It revealed that there would be a population explosion.– Jesus said, ‘As in the days of Noah!’ (Gen. 6, Matt 24:37-39 - today, world population is more than 7billion).

– Although the Bible did not give dates, it said famine and starvation would take place in parts of the earth - Matt 24:7, finally leading to a world-wide food shortage and famine during the Tribulation!” (Rev 11:6– Rev. 6:5-8, Rev 13:15:17).

[This is what is going presently in Yemen, South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia. We even see drought in some part of europe, spain and italy especially].

– “And by prophetic vision the Lord allowed me to tell the people a seasonal time that has already started and we are seeing signs of it over the world!”.

–“The Bible predicted the exact moral conditions that the world is in today!–

And the conditions in our streets and city life are shocking as prophecy described it! Luke 17:28-29 - [ a repeat of Sodom and Gomorrah - the days of Lot, infact this generation has surpass what happen in the days of Lot and Noah].

– It foretold of the anarchy [As we see in Venezuela, Philippines and Turkey] and crises of crime, and the lawlessness that would lead to the anti-Christ system!”

– “It also revealed what the gradual development of inflation would lead to!” (Rev. chap. 6– Rev. 13:13-18). [This has been spontaneous over the year, it will soon reach it's peak].

– “The Bible foretold of men exploring the heavens! (Obad. 1:4– Amos 9:2, Deu 30:4).

– It mentions ‘nest’ orbital platforms!. . . Also it leads us to believe that they would have children in space!”.

– “The Bible describes destructive inventions that travel underneath the sea (submarines, etc., verse 3). [As we can see military drills going on between nations, of recent is between Russia and China, Turkey and Qatar. Remember the 1967 war in Israel, it wad military drills that preceded it].

– Verse 11 speaks of raising up a tabernacle again although this one could be speaking of the millennium. . . .But Rev. 11:1-2 definitely describes a Jewish Temple will be built as our age closes out!” (II Thess. 2:4)

The Bible also describes the rising and the future of Communism! (Russia) – The feet of a bear, Rev. 13:1, the clay in the image, Dan. 2:42. It depicts its final end!” (Ezek. 38:22– Ezek. 39:2). More to write on this.

The bible also talked about 10 Kings to rise from the west at the latter days, from which the anti-christ will emerge, Rev 17:3, 12-13 - the ten horns, Dan 2:33 - the ten feet of iron, this we see in the unification of the old Roman Empire - the EU. More to write on this. Don't miss it.

– “It prophesies the rise of China into importance and also its gigantic downfall! (Rev. 16:12-15) – In fact this takes in all the kings of the Orient and Japan in its final hour!” [We can see this right in our eye, China are taken over in the Technology world, then we see North Korea equiping her military, causing a threat to the US].

“Prophecy foretold of the pestilence conditions [As we see Cholera outbreak in Yemen], the pollution and poisons on every side! Many Scriptures spoke about the coming of chemical warfare [Syria lately]

But beyond this threat is the most fearful of all, the Bible predicted, the Atomic! . . .The nuclear menace is the most fearful of all because man now possess the means of destroying the entire population of the earth!” (Matt. 24:21).

[This is the latest, all nations are empwering themselves, preparing for the Armageddon, N/Korea, China, US, Russia, Turkey, etc].

– In verse 22 ,Jesus said, “unless He intervened there would be no flesh saved at all!”

“Here are some Scriptures that Jesus said would be fulfilled in our generation!

–“That He would come as a thief in the night! (I Thess. 5:2) – And that His coming would be suddenly . . . as a flash of lightning, then in a moment in the twinkling of an eye!” (I Cor. 15:52).

– “And after the Translation and the changing of our bodies, He will return again at Armageddon!”

– (Isa. 66:15-16) “For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire"

" For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.”

And now I would like to insert this past writing: “The Scriptures reveal the Lord has appointed a day, even before the foundation of the world.

He would know the exact date of the Translation and the Great Tribulation!

– And now during harvest time He is revealing the season of His soon return!”

THE PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MIDDLE EAST CRISES IN THE END OF TIME - PART 3

In our last article on this series where we explained the coming of islam, we stop at the death of Muhammad...

In today's article, we want to see how the nations in the middle east came to being, how crises and wars are being used to shape the map of this region, we will also look at the creation of Israel nation and the challenges they face from the arab world. It should be understood that middle east is dominated by Arab/muslim world, only Israel stand alone. And all the Arab nations around it, left and right have not been able to conquer it. Why? Its God's own nation. So, lets see how God was able to fulfill his prophecies on the establishment of the nation of Israel and the establishment of the middle east region. I believe you will understand the history and background of this middle east region at the end of this teaching. It's a indepth article a student of biblical prophecies and end time must not miss.

At the end of this write up, we will be adding our end time news and latest event videos for Sunday, August 6 and Monday, August 7, 2017. We would have like to dig deeper on how islam spread rapidly, but I'm not led to do so for now. The only thing i will add is that, the successors of Muhammad has always been the problem and that's what even lead to the split of Islamic religion. I think we dont need to waste our time on this religion.

We ought to know by now it's one of the religion Antichrist is using and which he will surely use to destabilize the western world as we are seeing it now, facts also reveal that this religion is been use by the illuminati to achieve their new world order. What i see is before Jesus Christ appear at the rapture, muslim and Christian population might tally.

So, let us focus more on the main topic which is the middle east.

The Creation of the modern Middle East

For hundreds of years the Arabs did not have a government of their own. From the conquest of the Arab lands by the Ottoman Turks in the early 16th century, they were not an independent people. Until World War I most of the Arab world lay within the Ottoman Empire. Other parts had become colonial territories of the European powers during the 19th century as the Ottoman Empire began to shrink.

The Arabs yearned for a free and independent Arabic- speaking nation. In the 20th century they were to become independent yet not one nation but more than

20. One great frustration for the Arab world today is that there are 22 Arab countries.

While subjects of the Ottoman sultan as the 20th century dawned, the Arab world was at peace. Few would have guessed then how fundamentally this region was to change in the next few decades. In the year 1900 the Middle East was indeed, as described in the introduction, a “political backwater”

The catalyst that rearranged the regional map was World War I. The assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, was the event that triggered the war. Within weeks all the major powers of Europe were involved. Problems in the Balkans had been building up as the Ottoman Empire declined and retreated from its territories there. Nationalist sentiment among the various ethnic groups was stirring up feelings against foreign imperial rule, directed against the Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as the Turks.

At the onset of war, it was not clear which side the Ottomans would be on. Finally they opted to support Germany and Austria against the alliance of Britain, France and Russia. This proved to be a fatal error in judgment. Within a few years it led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the end of Turkish domination of the Arab world after centuries of rule.

A century later it is still diffcult to comprehend how the assassination of a fairly obscure European archduke could lead to such tumultuous change and to a century of seemingly never-ending violence, but that shot heard ’round the world is still reverberating.

Nationalist and Ethnic Aspirations lead to Change

Before the assassination, ethnic aspirations were surfacing throughout Europe and the Middle East. In the Victorian era imperialism had been the vogue. The idea that one nation, usually considered superior, could rule over others less able, was perfectly acceptable in a Europe dominated by multiethnic empires.

Many of these empires were quite benign, allowing different ethnic groups within their borders a great deal of freedom, including the freedom to carry out business and to prosper. But the desire for national homelands was building up partly as a result of increased educational opportunities that encouraged the reading of national literature, thereby fostering a sense of national identity.

This rise in ethnic consciousness was not limited to Europe. The Middle East was another area where people wanted to fulfll their national aspirations.

The trend for each ethnic group to seek independence was one that would play a large role in the 20th century, fulflling the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 24. When asked by His disciples what would be the sign of His coming and of the end of the age, one of the problems He foretold was an increase in ethnic tension. “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom,” He prophesied (verse 7). The Greek word translated “nation” is ethnos—from which the English word ethnic is derived.

With the development of democratic institutions in a number of countries, ethnic groups had representation in capitals and were able to press their case for more autonomy. Many, though, wanted total independence. This tension was a leading cause of World War I and a major consideration at the peace conference in Paris that followed.

The Paris conference led to the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, which led to the creation of new countries throughout Europe and the Middle East. The old empires were gone—new, smaller nations replaced them, further complicating international relations. The “war to end war” had been replaced by the “Peace to end Peace,” as British offcer Archibald Wavell put it.

Brewing Arab Revolt

On the eve of World War I the British already constituted a major power in the Middle East. Originally they had become involved to protect their lifeline to India, the most prized possession of the British Empire. Benjamin Disraeli, a British prime minister of Jewish descent, had arranged the financing of the Suez Canal, considered a vital artery of the empire.

The British controlled Egypt, the location of the canal, but did not annex it as a colony. They also ruled Aden, at the southern tip of Arabia, and held other strategic territories around the Persian Gulf.

Thus when World War I broke out, the British were in a perfect position to sponsor an Arab revolt against the Turks, allies of their enemy Germany. This Arab revolt began in the Hejaz, the coastal region of Arabia along the Red Sea where Mecca and Medina sit, on June 10, 1916, two years into the First World War. The revolt was led by the grand sharif of Mecca and leader of the Hashemite clan, Hussein ibn Ali (1852-1931), a descendant of Muhammad through the prophet’s grandson Hasan. Hussein was an ancestor of the present Jordanian monarch, also a Hashemite.

Ironically, in this revolt the Arabs sided with Christian British forces against the Muslim Turks, but the desire for an independent Arab nation was paramount. Two of the sharif’s sons led the Arab forces, financed by the British and assisted in the feld by the famous British soldier T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). The Arabs understood that victory would mean an Arab nation.

This understanding came about as a result of correspondence between the British high commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon, and Sharif Hussein between July 14, 1915, and March 30, 1916. In a series of 10 confidential letters between the two, Sharif Hussein offered to help the British by revolting against the Turks, in exchange for a promise of independence for the Arabs after victory. The British agreed to this, with the exclusion of some areas, including those under British control.

The uprising was successful. In October 1917 Allied forces under British Gen. Allenby invaded Palestine, capturing Jerusalem on Dec. 9. For the first time since the Crusaders were defeated in 1244 the city was once again in Christian hands. Now, after 400 years of peace under the Ottomans, began a century of confict centering on the City of Peace.

Earlier the same year the British had taken Baghdad. The following year Damascus fell. Three days after falling to the forces of the Arab revolt, Gen. Allenby and Prince Faisal, the son of Sharif Hussein, entered the city. Faisal, leading 1,000 horsemen, was lauded by the populace, relieved at the end of Ottoman rule and elated at the prospect of an independent Arab kingdom.

Following the defeat of the Axis powers, the empires of Germany, Austria and the Ottomans all collapsed. The Russian Empire—allied to Britain, France and, later, the United States had already fallen to communism.

The world was never to be the same again. World War I marked the end of the old order.

Contradictory promises set the stage for confict

Anxious to win the war, the British had given contradictory promises to the Arabs and Jews and also to their allies, the French and Russians.

In November 1917, with the fall of Russia to the Bolsheviks, the revolutionaries suddenly found themselves in possession of secret papers from the former czarist regime and the interim government. They made public a secret agreement made in May 1916 called the Sykes-Picot agreement, named for Sir Mark Sykes and Georges Picot, the chief British and French negotiators. This agreement showed that the British and French had plans to carve up the Ottoman Empire, dividing the spoils among themselves, without giving any territory to the Arabs.

In the same month, just five days before the Bolsheviks took power in Russia, the British had issued the famous Balfour Declaration, named after their foreign secretary, Arthur James Balfour. This declaration pledged British support for a national Jewish homeland in Palestine. These conficting promises were to cause endless problems for the British in the years to come and even greater problems for the Arabs and Jews.

Arabs had fought with the British against the Turks, contributing to the Allied victory over the Central European powers. In return, they expected full control of all Arab lands, other than those already under European colonial rule such as Egypt, Aden and Algeria. They certainly expected Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Palestine to be directly and exclusively controlled by Arabs.

Israel and Judah, often referred to as the Holy Land, had been under Islamic control since the seventh century, except for a brief period during the Crusades in the 11th century. Jews could live in Palestine, but any attempt to create a Jewish homeland would be resisted.

At the peace conference in Paris that led to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Arab delegates (and T.E. Lawrence) were betrayed as the victorious allies divided the Ottoman Empire between British and French spheres of infuence. The newly formed League of Nations formally gave Britain a mandate to rule over Palestine, Transjordan and Iraq. The French received a similar mandate to rule over Syria and Lebanon. Neither the Jews nor the Arabs received what they had been promised not then, at least.

Britain Inherits a Dilemma

Palestine was the biggest problem. For a while the British allowed unrestricted Jewish immigration, but this led to Arab outcries. Fearful of a Jewish takeover, the Arabs demanded that the British end Jewish immigration. This they did but on the eve of World War II, in which 6 million Jews would be put to death in the Nazi Holocaust. The escape route to Palestine had been cut off just when it was needed most.

In the three decades that the British controlled Palestine, the political map of the region continued to change. The Egyptians regained their sovereignty in 1922 and Iraq in 1932, though Britain continued to have considerable infuence in both. Lebanon received independence from France in 1941. Syria followed fve years later in 1946, the same year in which the British created an independent Palestinian-Arab state when it gave independence to Transjordan (shortened to Jordan).

Following the end of World War II in 1945, an exhausted Britain began her withdrawal from empire. Pakistan and India were given independence in 1947. A withdrawal from Palestine was to follow less than a year later.

The British could no longer keep peace between the Arabs and Jews. Jewish terrorists had blown up the King David Hotel, British military headquarters in Jerusalem, with the loss of almost 100 British soldiers. As with India, there was no longer any support at home for Britain to risk the lives of its men to preserve peace between hostile forces. The British notifed the recently formed United Nations, successor to the pre-war League of Nations, that they would leave Palestine, giving the UN six months’ notice.

The birth of Israel

The United Nations voted to divide Palestine between the Arabs and the Jews, with Jerusalem to become an international city. The Israelis accepted the plan; the Arabs rejected it. As the British left, Jewish leaders proclaimed the birth of the independent Jewish nation of Israel the evening of May 14-15, 1948. Within hours, armies from five surrounding Arab nations attacked Israel, determined to destroy the fedgling state with its population of a mere half-million. But they lost,God us always behind his people.

The war lasted until early the following year, with Israel gaining territory in addition to the land granted by the UN resolution. Most of the Arabs in those areas left their lands and have been refugees ever since, consigned to makeshift settlements in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Those Arabs who stayed in Israel were granted citizenship in the new country and, ironically, today enjoy considerably more personal freedoms than their fellow Arabs in Arab-ruled countries.

More wars followed. In 1956, Israel sided with the British and French against Egypt in an attempt to take back the Suez Canal, seized by Egypt’s revolutionary government. American intervention forced the three nations out, a big boost to Arab nationalism. Within a few years the French lost Algeria and became irrelevant in the region. The British lost almost all their empire within a decade of the Suez Canal crisis and withdrew completely from the region by 1971.

Replacing them were the Americans and the Soviets, the two Cold War antagonists using proxy states in the Middle East to thwart the other’s interests and ambitions.

But Arab nationalism was unstoppable. The desire for Arab unity was still on the minds of people throughout the Middle East. And the Arabs were not alone in breaking away from European colonial rule. New nations around the world were being born with the collapse of the European empires after World War II. World War I had seen the collapse of those European empires that ruled over large parts of Europe. Now those empires that had colonies around the world were following suit. Never before had the map of the world changed so dramatically.

Conclusion

To illustrate just how fundamental a change took place, realize that immediately after the 1919 Treaty of Versailles there were no independent Arab nations. Apart from Persia (Iran) and Afghanistan, both non-Arab countries, there were no independent Islamic nations anywhere on earth.

The overthrow of the Ottoman sultan had led to the establishment of the secular Turkish Republic —that is, while its people remained mostly Islamic, the government officially became secular and moved in a Western direction. Although Egypt was independent from 1922, its king was not an Arab and the British still dominated the country behind

Today there are 57 Islamic nations, most of them ruled by Muslims. This includes 22 Arab countries, which hold the majority of the world’s known reserves of oil the lifeblood of the global economy. Is it any wonder that the Middle East have suddenly come to the forefront of world afairs?
